With Project Tundra continuing to make progress toward key milestones, ensuring the safety of the community remains a central focus. At a safety seminar for landowners on Nov. 14, project leaders outlined the extensive measures in place to ensure the people and their properties are protected throughout every phase of the project.

“Safety is a core value and a top priority in everything we do,” Jason Uhlir, Minnkota safety manager, told the more than 50 people in attendance. “We’re very proud of our safety record at the Young Station and remain committed to ensuring every team member goes home safely at the end of each day. Our success comes from everyone working together and looking out for one another.”

Uhlir was joined by Shannon Mikula, Minnkota environmental manager and Project Tundra geologic storage lead, and Carlee McLeod, Minnkota external affairs representative, as presenters at the meeting.

While project safety has been a topic at all previous landowner meetings, this session provided an opportunity to more thoroughly cover the carbon storage processes, regulatory standards, emergency response plans, financial assurance requirements and other safety protocols. A question-and-answer session followed, allowing landowners to speak directly with project leaders.

“Ensuring the safety of our plant, our employees and the community is a responsibility we take very seriously,” Mikula said. “We’ve worked tirelessly to implement strong safety protocols, conduct extensive reviews, and assess every part of our operation to minimize risks. From start to finish, our focus remains on creating a secure environment for everyone connected to our project.”

In addition to the landowners, the Project Tundra team has also met with local and county emergency response personnel to provide information and ensure all parties remain on the same page. As project development efforts continue forward, additional opportunities for engagement on topics including safety, community benefits and other issues of importance.
